Apple TV+ is a platform amongst a few that are outstanding in the streaming wars but is it worth it?
But before we explore that, let’s think about the fact that you don’t have to use an exclusive streaming service all the time. It’s okay to watch Marvel Universe or Star Wars or Stranger Things or explore Apple TV+ at your leisure, and that is the point, these services are there to enjoy in leisure time. If you can have all the streaming services at the same time that’s okay, and vice versa using a couple of streaming services is okay too, they are there to be enjoyed not to be a burden. Let’s explore Apple TV.
The Faces of Apple TV
Nearly a year since it’s launch, Apple TV+ has gone for the A-list. With a net worth of over $2 trillion, Apple seems determined to put together a quality service. They have also received Emmy nominations for some of their productions. Covering genres from drama to sci-fi and even a family fun section on their app, Apple seems to be committed to wanting to build the best product they can using original content.
They also celebrated this past Emmy award season with 18 nominations across six premium programs. That is a first for a streaming service in the first year of operation, a milestone to be proud of, and something that hopefully will continue for their viewers.
With a lineup that includes Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey, Tom Hanks, Jennifer Aniston, Chris Evans, and Jason Momoa, let’s explore the world of Apple TV.
After The Oprah Winfrey show finished, it is lovely to see her back with a new line up. With the ability to chat and engage with her guests, Oprah is courteous to both her guests and audience, making The Oprah Conversation a must see. In episode 5, Oprah sits down and has a virtual conversation with Mariah Carey. The interview includes 2 of Oprah’s loves, books and talking about current events. The episode is revealing, as Mariah discusses her new memoir, recently published and the challenges she has faced in her life. It is a worthwhile watch with the global music superstar and a leading international TV star, having a conversation.
Considered an American cultural icon, the actor is well-known worldwide, the comedies Splash (1984) and Big (1988) were his breakthrough roles. He has since tackled roles about AIDS in the film Philadelphia (1993) and several period films.
Due to his popularity, Hanks was the right choice for the film Greyhound (2020). An Apple original production, Greyhound, tells a historical story of an inexperienced U.S. Navy commander during WW2. Playing the role of Captain Krause, and based on the novel The Good Shepherd, the Allied convoy attempt to get supplies to the U.K. It is a dramatic story that is stunning to look at and tells an emotional tale of adversity during that time.
Well known for his Marvel character Captain America and with over 14 million followers on his Twitter it is easy to see why Evans got picked up by Apple as part of their emerging platform. Crafting his talent from a young age, he attended musical theatre classes and later took courses at the Lee Strassberg Theatre and Film Institute after moving to New York at about the age of 18. Starring in the drama Defending Jacob, the gripping drama is now available for viewing.
Popular at fan conventions and lucky to land the role of Aquaman, Jason Momoa brings energy to Apple as the lead in the Sci-Fi series See. Momoa recently shared that he and the cast were given about a month to prepare for the role, as they trained with a consultant who worked with blind people. The cast was given training in how those that are blind communicate, and they prepared physically for the role as it is set in a dystopian future.
With over 15 million on his Instagram account, his presence on social media is ever-growing, and The Oprah Magazine also mentioned his beautiful Instagram and what an inspiration it is, he also has a YouTube channel, which is fun to watch. The trailer for See has had over 32 million views, with successful reviews.

The second generation in the entertainment business, her breakout role was in the 1993 horror-comedy Leprechaun, which is still a favourite with some horror fans.
The sitcom Friends put Aniston on the world stage and earned her a bunch of awards. She continues to grow as an actress with a good performance in The Morning Show, and I’m not making that up, she got another award, she will need a new shelf soon. The Morning Show is worth a watch.
Unless you live under a rock, everyone knows who Steven Spielberg is. Spielberg and his friend George Lucas breathed new life into Hollywood when it was on the verge of dying with spaghetti westerns, and western films were so prolific that even Marilyn Monroe starred in one. Considered one of the founding fathers of the new Hollywood era, he brings his expertise to Apple TV, as Hollywood is breaking into a new era.
Amazing Stories produced by Steven Spielberg and his production company Amblin Entertainment is based on the science fiction magazine created by Hugo Gernsback in April 1926. The series first ran from 1985 to 1987, it was nominated for 12 Emmy Awards and won five. Batteries Not Included came out of those stories becoming a theatrical release. Along a similar vein to The Twilight Zone, each story is unique bring the viewer into a world of sci-fi and fantasy. Amazing Stories is now available on Apple TV+.
Is It Worth It?
This is a new streaming service that hasn’t had the first birthday yet, producing unique original content and winning awards. The other considerations are the cost to the viewer and how to access it. A free trial for 7 days or a free 1-year subscription is available with some Apple devices, check qualification before purchasing. Monthly costs are $4.99 in the U.S. a month or $7.99 a month in Australia. A 1-year subscription would also make a great present.
The Apple TV app is now on Xbox and PlayStation consoles too.
This comprehensive article by Apple support has all the details viewers need.
But is it worth it? With new shows available every week, the cost is negligible, excellent tech support (you can go to an Apple store too), my verdict is why not?
