Commonwealth Games 2018

Australia is the number 1 destination in the world, it’s on most peoples list. The Commonwealth Games will be held in Australia next year in Queensland on the Gold Coast. Our sports writer Daniel will be writing about the event and this article is an overview of what to expect.

The 2018 Commonwealth Games will be the 21st edition of the international multi-sport event and will be hosted by Australia.

Also known as the XXI Commonwealth Games or Gold Coast 2018, in reference to where the games are being held, it will feature a total of 70 participating nations, with only the Maldives failing to take part from the original list of nations having withdrawn from the Commonwealth in 2016.

The 2018 Commonwealth Games will take place between the 4th and 15th April 2018 at various venues on the Gold Coast, Queensland.

There are 70 different participating nations due to compete in the 2018 Commonwealth Games, with the Great Britain split into individual countries, meaning England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will be represented individually.

This is one of the only occasions athletes from these nations can compete on the international stage for their individual country, as opposed to Great Britain.

There must be a minimum of ten core sports and a maximum of seventeen sports included in the Commonwealth Games and the 2018 edition will be no different.  The ten core sports include:

  • Athletics
  • Badminton
  • Boxing
  • Hockey
  • Lawn bowls
  • Netball (for women)
  • Rugby Sevens
  • Squash
  • Swimming
  • Weightlifting

Host nations have no choice in the matter, they must include these sports in their selection of seventeen sports in total to be considered for the Commonwealth Games.

The remaining seven sports can be chosen by the host venue and this is where things start to become interesting.  There is a massive list of sports to choose from and those athletes who participate in these sports are all hoping it will be included in the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

However, with the choice of close to twenty sports to pick from, there are going to many athletes left disappointed.  The Gold Coast committee have decided to go with the following additional sports for the 2018 Commonwealth Games:

  • Basketball
  • Beach Volleyball
  • Cycling
  • Gymnastics
  • Shooting
  • Triathlon
  • Wrestling

In comparison to the 2014 Commonwealth Games, which was held in Glasgow, Judo and Table Tennis have been dropped and Beach Volleyball and Basketball have been included.

Therefore, there is not a huge difference in the variety of sports being contested and although there will be the disappointment for the Judo and Table Tennis athletes, there will be the joy for those who play Beach Volleyball and Basketball.

With Louise Bawden and Taliqua Clancy well inside the top thirty Beach Volleyball Official World Rankings and the excellent facilities on the Gold Coast to stage this event, it is little surprise it has been included.

The Beach Volleyball tournament will be contested on the Coolangatta Beachfront, inside a unique stadium construction and this will help to produce what is sure to be a tremendous atmosphere.  It will be the first time Beach Volleyball will be held at the Commonwealth Games and provides a great chance for athletes who may not have had the opportunity to compete at the Olympic Games, to show what they can do on the sand.

There will be a total of twelve men’s and women’s teams competing for the gold medal, with the Australian teams qualifying automatically as the host nation.

While rugby is a favourite sport, the current sports news is that the All Blacks will not be participating in the Commonwealth Games at Gold Coast 2018.

Basketball will make a return to the schedule at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, having only once been involved in the past.  The previous time Basketball was included was also in Australia, back in the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games.

Australia came out on top, winning the gold medal in the men’s and the women’s basketball events, with New Zealand picking up the silver medal on both occasions.  Australia will be hoping the inclusion of basketball again in 2018 will give them the opportunity to showcase their basketball skills and pick up two more gold medals in the sport.

The Gold Coast will also host the most extensive integrated para-sport program in Commonwealth Games history.

Canada has done well in recent years in swimming overall in world games, Penny Oleksiak and Kylie Masse are part of a new and exciting team selection.

Over 300 athletes will participate over the course of the two weeks, with 38 medal events adding colossal excitement to the 2018 Commonwealth Games.  This will be an increase of 45% more athletes and 73% more medals than the previous edition of the games, which is tremendous.

Paratriathlon will also make its debut at 2018 Gold Coast and the Wheel Chair Marathon will also take place for the first time at a Commonwealth Games.

The 2018 Commonwealth Games will also see an equal number of events for men and women, making the Gold Coast games a first in many areas of the event.
